Why India’s Manufacturing Ecosystem Needs Urgent Modernisation

16 May 2025

India’s shopfloors are at a crossroads. We can’t rely on ageing machinery and outdated systems to build a $5 trillion economy. While the world embraces smart factories, many of our plants are still waiting for decade-old capex investments to yield returns. That mindset has to change.

Modernisation isn’t about luxury it’s a necessity for survival and global relevance. We need bold decisions: investments in modern machines, smart tooling, quality systems, and data visibility. Not just to add capacity, but to double output, enhance precision, and improve quality with the same resources.

Scaling without hiring. Improving yield without expanding footprint. Increasing transparency without micromanagement. These are outcomes of ecosystem-wide modernisation.

Make in India must not become a low-cost output trap. Our true opportunity lies in becoming a global manufacturing powerhouse known for excellence, not just affordability. That will only happen if we modernise our mindset – to drive the change in entire manufacturing ecosystem.

"Modern machines are only part of the answer. What India needs is an entire ecosystem of excellence technology, mindset, and systems working together to derive a huge competitive advantage."
It’s no time to wait. But the time to build, transform our factories to compete globally.
